Welterweight Weekender
The 147lb division’s successors take centre stage this weekend as they vie for significance heading into the year’s crown jewel - Errol Spence vs Terence Crawford.
Whilst it will understandably be the two premier welterweights who dominate the pages, there is always room for an intruder. Especially one who is blessed with a heavy hand.
Welcome to the fray, Jaron Ennis.
However, a few more years, a few more fights, and a few more devastating knockouts would no doubt see the public appetite grow close to that of the July 29th undisputed showdown.
For now, though, they must stay in their own lanes, continuing their ascents to what is a very lucrative summit.
But like any ascent, it is never without its challenges.
Jaron Ennis has never wanted to play second fiddle. It isn’t in his makeup. Whilst many may relish the patience, Ennis holds nothing but resentment for the boxing bigwigs.
Ennis is the current IBF interim champion, meaning a pathway to either a full world title shot, or elevation to full champion, is pretty clear.
But it isn’t materials that motivate the 30-0 Philly native.
See, ‘Boots’ wants to get his hands on the big dogs. Yet a move up in weight for either Crawford or Spence after July 29th will lay to rest to his wish.
As such, Ennis has gone on record to say he will follow his rivals, seeking a path to greatness determined by his victims rather than his mantelpiece.
It is a refreshing outlook, but one that will remain a fantasy if he is to trip up against a tricky customer in Roiman Villa.
Villa is coming off the back of a win against highly rated Rashidi Ellis, who albeit carrying a hand injury, was dropped twice by the unrelenting Colombian.
He will no doubt provide a test for Ennis who, with another step up in level of opposition, must be ready to prove that he isn’t just another charlatan.
It is definitely a weekend to keep an eye on.
