PARIS OLYMPICS 2024: FEMALE BOXERS TO FOLLOW
The Olympics FINALLY kick off in France this week and having previously selected one male fighter from each category to follow at Paris 2024, now we turn our attention to the females.
With women’s boxing booming in both the paid and unpaid ranks, there will undoubtedly be a few future stars on show in Paris over the course of the next month.
50kg (Flyweight) - Wu Yu (China):
A gold medallist at the 2023 World Championships, she has beaten most of her rivals in this tournament and is full of confidence having lost just once in the past 18 months.
54kg (Bantamweight) - Charley Davison (UK):
Davison took a seven-year break from boxing in 2012 and ended up winning the ABAs in 2019. She lost in the round of 16 in Tokyo but claimed bronze at the European games last year, and she is certainly capable of being amongst the medals in Paris.
57kg (Featherweight) - Irma Testa (Italy):
By some distance, one of the most experienced women in the whole tournament, she won bronze in Tokyo and then gold at the World Championships in India last year.
Testa hasn’t fought in over a year, but she will be hard to beat if she can rediscover her old form.
60kg (Lightweight) - Kelly Harrington (Ireland):
Having won gold in Tokyo, and again at the European games last year, Harrington is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s greatest ever sportswomen.
She did lose her last fight in April to Natalia Sadrina, but remains the one to beat in a competitive weight class.
66kg (welterweight) - Busenaz Surmeneli (Turkey):
Olympic gold medallist, 2x World Championship gold medallist and European Games gold medallist, Surmeneli has lost only one fight since 2021 having cruised to gold in Tokyo.
By a distance, she is the stand-out name in a fairly weak weight class.
75kg (middleweight) - Caitlin Parker (Australia):
Having lost in the first round in Tokyo, Parker showed she’d learnt a lot when winning silver at last year’s World Championships in India.
Certainly capable of better here, and she’s one you definitely cannot rule out.
